The Hub House Diner @ Dulwich Hill

It has been more than a month since my last post due to the end of another uni semester, and exams, but I am now back in the blogging scene.  People are constantly looking for a place for a good burger, and Hub House Diner is one of  those places. It has a great diner vibe with bubbly wait staff and food for all times of the day. They are open Tuesday to Sunday for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner offering great food at affordable prices! I went with my sister and sister-in-law for dinner.

House Chargrilled beef burger
My sister-in-law ordered the burger that had the bacon. The burger may look smaller in the pictures, but there is more than meets the eye.

Half Chargrilled Basted Chicken - Hickory Smoked BBQ Sauce
You can choose between a lemon chilli, or hickory smoked BBQ sauce. The half chicken serving was the largest half chicken serving I have ever seen. Apart from the serving size, there was a generous amount of coleslaw and fries too. The coleslaw wasn't extremely creamy, which allowed for a light side. The hickory sauce is smokey and slightly sticky. It was finger-licking goodness.

Hub Beef Cheese Burger
I thought I would start with the basics which is a cheeseburger with the standard trimmings of cheese, onion, gherkin, mustard and tomato sauce.  It may be simple in nature, but a fantastic burger! I found the burgers clean to eat without sacrificing any droppings. All the burgers come with a side of fries, which are crunchy and have a chicken salt that is slightly lemony.

Deconstructed pumpkin pie
The desserts became a must when we started seeing other people get desserts and how tasty they looked. Our favourite was the deconstructed pumpkin pie. It had elements of a sweet pumpkin mousse, meringue, honeycomb, cream and pistachio soil. The pumpkin mousse was amazing! The flavour was strong, and sweet but not overpowering. The honeycomb and pistachio soil added crunch against the cloud like meringue. I feel that this is a must order!

Eton Mess
Eton mess was great as well. It has meringue, macerated fruit, whipped cream, lemon curd, raspberry coulis, pistachio soil and topped with a honeycomb marshmallow. It is a dessert calling summer with the bright colours and flavours. The meringue crunch cut through the soft ingredients. The honeycomb marshmallow was delicious. The dessert became too sweet (never thought I would say that) over time, which made is slightly sickening. However, we still finished it!

Love the quote on the takeaway box

Hub House Diner is a great place for dinner, and I definitely want to check it out during breakfast and lunch. The serving sizes are generous, where none of use actually finished our fries, and we all love fries! The service is fantastic, and the food was great. All mains are under $30 (with burger and fries less than $20), and desserts under $15.

Good food, good times!

BRODBURGER @ Kingston, ACT

After a morning of bi-polar weather and flowers, we were hungry and headed to BRODBURGER. BRODBURGER started out as a food van/truck, but due to overwhelming demand they opened up a restaurant, and continue to be popular.

BRODVEG
Assorted flame grilled vegetables (mushroom, eggplant, zucchini, capsicum).

Topped with fried halloumi cheese. Includes homemade aioli & tomato relish

BRODCHICKEN
Succulent flame grilled chicken breast. Topped with bacon, avocado, fresh lettuce, tomatoes & spanish onions. Includes homemade aioli & tomato relish.

BRODBURGER
½ pound flame grilled beef patty. Fresh lettuce, tomatoes & Spanish onions.
Includes homemade aioli & tomato relish.

All the burgers at BRODBURGER are deliciously simple. They are big and filling, and cater for vegetarians (which is rare for a burger joint). For anyone going to Canberra, I strongly suggest going to BRODBURGER and trying the food. It was definitely one of the best burgers I have eaten.

Vaz's Takeaway @ Mount Pritchard

I came across this place whilst browsing on Facebook where a few friends were tagged in a photo with a HUGE burger. After doing some research I found out it was from Vaz's Takeaway (35/33 Hamel Rd, Mt Pritchard).
http://vazstakeaway.com/

Now, everyone loves a good burger and hopefully one that is reasonably priced and Vaz's is the place to go. I have to admit, the location isn't the greatest looking but you should never judge a book by its cover. It may be one of the only standing shops in the Mount Pritchard Shopping Centre, but it seems that everyone goes there for a good feed. It looks like your old school corner shops with the plastic walk through doors and a few seats here and there, but all you need is a counter to order your food.

Vaz's Takeaway Shop Front

Vaz's Takeaway is famous for The Mighty Vaz's Ark Burger. Unfortunately, me and no one in my family was game enough to try to tackle such a challenge so we settled for all different burgers on the menu. These burgers included:

  • BURGER WITH THE LOT - 100% Beef, onions, crisp lettuce, tomato, beetroot, egg, bacon, pineapple and cheese $4.50
  • MEXICANA CHILLI BURGER - 100% Beef patty, onion, crisp lettuce, tomato, beetroot, cheese with Vaz’s special home made chilli sauce $4.50
  • BEEF BURGER - 100% beef, crisp lettuce, onions, tomato, and your choice of sauce $3.50
  • CHICKEN BURGER - Chicken schnitzel, lettuce and mayo $5.00

I wasn't able to take a photo of the other burgers because by the time I got my camera out the family had already started digging in. I had the Mexicana Chilli burger and it was one very good burger, make that one great burger! At the moment I have to say it is the best and probably cheapest burger I have tried...to date.

The beef patty is flattened out to the perfect thickness without being to dry or to oily and just melts in your mouth. The cheese is perfectly melted on top of the beef patty adding a whole new element of tasty goodness. Also the vegetables on the burger tasted nice and fresh as they still contained their crispness. I couldn't really taste the sauce that was on the burger, so we bought a separate chilli sauce to dip the fries in and it was good. It didn't taste to spicy, so for all those people who can't handle chilli, you will definitely be able to handle this sauce. And when you combine all those elements together you get a close to  perfect burger.

Now, normally when you eat a good burger you can see the oil come through and therefore  the bun sometimes becomes soggy. This was not the case, when on the last bite everything tastes perfect and fresh just as the first bite (maybe due to the fact it was eaten extra fast), either way it was finger licking goodness. The fries were perfect with crispy outside and soft inside, and only a few were left over by the end of the meal.

You can't have a burger without fries!

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone that wants a good burger, I know it can be out of the way for some people, but I think its worth the trip. Get friends or family together and make it an outing! =D
